Pittsburgh, PA, February 22, 2011 – “Given to Nurture,” a Jonathan Shapiro sculpture on display at Fairmont Pittsburgh was recently awarded the Boutique Design Award for Most Unexpected Decorative Element. The Boutique Design Awards recognize the country’s cutting edge hospitality projects each year. The piece was commissioned by The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., which owns Three PNC Plaza, where the Fairmont Pittsburgh is located. Shapiro worked closely with PNC and interior design firm Gensler to create the sculpture specifically for the hotel’s contemporary lobby. In addition to Shapiro’s piece, Gensler utilized local artwork throughout the hotel, including photography, hand-blown glass fixtures and prints. For Shapiro, “Given to Nurture” is a warm, welcoming piece that is both “an echo of home to travelers and a familiar comfort to Pittsburghers.” It incorporates steel, wood and human labor – elements reflective of Pittsburgh’s industrial heritage. The primary material of the 15-foot sculpture is a repurposed sycamore tree carved to reflect the city’s three rivers and convey Pittsburgh’s ability to continuously move forward and reinvent itself.
“I am honored that one of my sculptures has received this recognition and proud to be a part of Pittsburgh’s arts community,” says Shapiro. “At first glance this sculpture is certainly unexpected, but the more the viewer interacts with it, the more its presence makes sense. It speaks to Pittsburgh’s past yet is very contemporary, much like Fairmont Pittsburgh.”
Fairmont Pittsburgh, a Four-Diamond and LEED Gold certified hotel, opened in March 2010. Located at 510 Market Street, Fairmont Pittsburgh is situated in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh and within walking distance to the city’s thriving Cultural District, the newly renovated Market Square, eclectic shopping and world-class sporting venues. The 185-room property features a contemporary art and industry design theme.
